The All Music Guide categorizes electronica as a top-level genre on their main page, where they state that electronica includes “dozens of stylistic fusions” ranging from danceable grooves to music for headphones and chillout areas.
After beginning as an underground genre in the early 1990s, electronica has grown to influence even mainstream crossover recordings. Elements of electronica are used today by many popular artists in mainstream music.

Hmm. So apparently no matter which term I use to describe anything beginning with "electr-" I will be labeled "retarded," "in kindergarten" and I'll even get my face punched in! Forget it, I'm not tagging anything. You taggers are scary!

sorry to cite from my own 'electronic' tag shout : "the wikipedia editors have a controverse discussion about discriminating 'electroning art music' from 'electronic music' and 'electronic dance music'. 'electronica' started as a commercial buzz word and not a genre, it was coined by US media to refer to the second wave of popular electronic music in the 90s (the first wave was called 'techno'), and has become an umbrella term, nobody is quite sure what it really means, who tries to define it will easily be attacked." it might as well be called 'techno' if media had decided the wording so.

"Electronica includes a wide range of contemporary electronic music designed for a wide range of uses, including foreground listening, some forms of dancing, and background music for other activities; but unlike electronic dance music, it is not specifically made for dancing. The term (electronica) was first used in the United States in the early 1990s with regards to post-rave global-influenced electronic dance music." <- Blame the americans.

"i have no idea how to categorize songs ... but my tags work for me and that's what matters" -- good point, i guess this relates to nearly everyone around here, including me. why shouldn't we delegate the categorization of songs to the federal bureau of musical tagging (ok, just kidding). @catachresistant & inyerface : why not ? hate tags, hate people's behavior, and hate god if you like to. but don't hate yourself by missing to have a laugh here :-) i came to understand that people use words they are accustomed to. after i had this revelation, i started to relax. really. i'm still relaxing ... okay, my next act is, i'm going to join a weird group, instead of 'electronic/a/o/u' they call themself "People's Socialist Republic of Good and Interesting Music Member Radio". don't know why this attracted me, maybe i could stand the music ...

who knew people cared so much about what tags people use for their songs. it's just a tag! that being said, i have no idea how to categorize songs, and so i usually just guess, but my tags work for me and that's what matters, i guess!

catachresistant: "If anyone uses this word while speaking to me in real life I will gladly introduce their face to my fist." I concor. It's "electronic music", without the "a".

i never ever use the tags 'electronic' nor 'electronica'. because on last.fm this usage created an extended broad pool of very eclectic unrelating music. i like some of björk's songs, and i don't even think about that this is "electronic". the same goes for 'classical', 'new age', 'world', 'ambient', 'rock', 'alternative', etc. etc. we can help ourselves by thinking twice and avoiding such generic swatting tags. keep peace, folks.
