Ambient music evolved from early 20th century forms of semi-audible music, from the impressionism of Erik Satie, through musique concrete and the minimalism of Terry Riley and Philip Glass, and Brian Eno’s deliberate sub-audible approach.
Later developments found the dreamy non-linear elements of ambient music applied to some forms of rhythmic music presented in chill-out rooms at raves and other dance events, but always with the primary feature that the music is intended to drift in and out of the listener’s awareness while creating its effect on the listener’s consciousness.

in true ambient music, you will hear soundscapes and minimal notes or arpeggios, no melodies, no rhythmic patterns or even drums, no groove. but because a lot if music has some ambience, drone patterns in the background, or is just minmalist or relaxing, people tend to tag it 'ambient'. that's just how 'ambient' music is perceived in the marketplace. and we better (and this holds for most artists) don't label an artist with 'ambient' or 'x', because that doesn't say anything about his or her specific pieces of music (but people lazily tend to overspill the general label to each and every musical track no matter what it really is).

i used my 'non-ambient' tag a lot in order to counterbalance mainstream tagging. most so-called 'electronic' music is tagged with 'ambient', 'downtempo', 'chillout', 'lounge', 'trip-hop', and sometimes even 'trance', 'techno', 'house' and 'dnb' -- ONE track. seems to be all the same ...

Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada don't belong on the list? Give me a break. Have you heard of the albums Selected Ambient Works Vol 2 and Geogaddi?

Probably one of the more misused tags here... I mean, only one of the top 10 supposed ambient artists on here can actually be labeled a "true" ambient artist (that being Brian Eno, obviously). For what should really be at the top of these charts, check out artists like as Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Vidna Obmana, Deepspace, Tetsu Inoue, Pete Namlook, ect... (not saying the other artists at the top of the list aren't worth listening to, quite the contrary, they just don't belong on this list).
