Stop reminding me of Simply Red

This is a really minor suggestion:

I use the "Paint it Black" theme on Last. Which I much prefer to the red theme.

However, as a result I always get to see the words "Simply Red" beneath my user name. This has the awful side effect of reminding me of the existence of Mick Hucknall, a person who I'd rather forget about completely, erase from my mind, and never have his ghastly voice or appearance taint my being ever again.

Obviously some people might have a problem with "Paint it black", but at least it's more descriptive.

I can see the desire to have a musical link, and some strange people might like to be reminded of the existence of Mr. Hucknall, but there's always going to be someone who's offended.

If it stated "Paint it red" and "Paint it black", then the case could be made that it's just coincidental that "Paint it black" is the name of a Rolling Stones song.

I'm clearly being pedantic, but please, save me from the memory of Mick Hucknall.
  • In terms of probability, it would probably be faster to hire a really good band to write a song called Simply Red, which would be so awesome as to overshadow all previous associations.

But yeah, I think there must be other musical associations around the words Red and Black, so you could switch it around a bit.

I think the song would have to be pretty incredible to shake off those negative associations that I hold.

I could write a song called "Simply Red", but I'd hate myself for reminding myself of Mr. Hucknall.

I'd nearly switch to the red version just to avoid those words.. just the black version is so much more pleasant on the eye..

Leave it as Simply Red. There's nothing wrong with Mick Hucknall. Maybe not the nicest person in the world but he's a fantastic vocalist. And I don't mind being reminded of Manchester.

Well you see, there's the rub. Of course there are going to be people who aren't going to mind, or may in fact like being reminded of simply red, but then there'll be people who won't.

You might not like it if it said, um, "Red Hot Chili Peppers", or "PlayLady in Red", or "The Red Light District", or "In the Red" and so on and so forth.

Like I say, I'm being pedantic. You'll never be able to satisfy everyone, period. I'm just trying to win a little bit of satisfaction for myself ;)

In fact, if you were to base it on numbers, it really should say Red Hot Chilli Pepper. They've got 1.5million listeners on Last.fm, compared to Simply Red's paltry 180,000.

And Rolling Stones should get knocked out by "Black Eyed Pea"
    :D

It's a tongue-in-cheek reference. Do you really think everyone who works here loves Simply Red? ;)

It's certainly looking likely. Probably some large posters of Mr. Hucknall hanging in Last.fm HQ.

    Let's see some photos!

    "The Red Light District"

    *laughs* That would be awesome!
I vote we change it to this, forever.
  • More choice!

I would like to have more choices of colours. Maybe PlayBlue (Da Ba Dee), Green Day or Deep Purple. =Þ

The css colour themes have lame names. But maybe some people would complain about being reminded about Eiffel 65.

Besides that i have nothing against Mick Hucknall i would vote for moving the Simply Red/Paint it Black color option to the user settings section!

Maybe the best thing to do is to use select the red theme and to use a css colour sheet...
  • Haha this thread its hilarious.. although as warmsugarcube said I'd never really thought twice about it till I read this thread, this is unfortunate - I use the black theme too :(
